To link in to my post about Letters from Iwo Jima I thought I’d take a leaf out of Filmspotting’s book and do a top 5 list. So here they are, my top 5 war films
- Apocalypse Now
- Downfall
- Schindler’s List
- Letters from Iwo Jima
- The Bridge on the River Kwai
Other contenders for the last position were The Great Escape and Empire of the Sun but The Bridge on the River Kwai just had the edge for its spirit. I also pondered the inclusion of films like Casablanca, The African Queen and The English Patient but ultimately decided that although these three stories were set in war time the overall theme was romance not war.
