Here are my top 5 book adaptations
- To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)
- Of Mice and Men (1992)
- A Clockwork Orange (1971)
- The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
- Capote (2005)
Criteria:
- I must have both read the book and seen the film.
- I would not include anything made for television.
- it had to be a great film in it’s own right.
Once again the fifth position was closely fought for with the likes of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Girl, Interrupted missing out. In the end I chose Capote because unlike all of the others it was the film that brought me to the book not the other way around. Other films that inspired me to read the books that inspired them were American Psycho and Enduring Love. These two both missed out on this list because having found something lacking in the film I went to the books in order to find some deeper meaning.
Having said that I was not going to include television dramas in my list I wanted to highlight some which I consider equal to my list of films. They are:
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1988)
- Pride and Prejudice (1995)
- Tales of the City/More Tales of the City/Further Tales of the City (1993-2001)
- Great Expectations (1999)
